The Wonder Years Give Back
The Wonder Years Give Back
On July 3, 2010, two best friends, Darrin Elwood and Tyler Blais, were on their way home to Salt Lake City from a road trip in Southern Utah and Arizona. At 5:45 a.m., Tyler was asleep in passenger seat and Darrin was driving. He fell asleep at the wheel and crashed into the guard rail on the side of the road. The guard rail impaled the car, killing both 17-year old boys (http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/saltlaketribune/obituary.aspx?n=darrin-elwood-and-tyler-blais&pid=143966090). The deaths have devastated not only their families, but their friends and just about anyone who had ever come into contact with either boy, as they were both such positive parts of everyones lives. The families cannot afford the expenses of the funerals. Though many have donated and raised money by selling keychains and tshirts, it's nowhere near enough to pay for the funerals, which cost $11,000 each on average.
On Wednesday, July 7th, two girls (who were good friends with Tyler and Darrin) and I attended The Wonder Years show in SLC. Tyler had been a big fan of TWY, and had planned on going to that very show. After the show, we went and talked to The Wonder Years, and the accident and loss of Darrin and Tyler came up. Soupy of TWY immediately got on the phone, called his manager, and had him dig up some rare vinyls for them to sign and auction off to help pay for the funerals of these young, drug free musicians who had their lives taken away from them far too soon.
These vinyls are super rare, and will be signed by all of the members of The Wonder Years. On top of that, every cent of the proceeds go to the families of the deceased to help them pay for the expenses.

Defeater - Travels
The Massachusetts-based band formed two years ago with the premise of utilizing a musical platform for good; whether it be starting an environmentally conscious company or writing albums about oppression and equal right.Unique in that each song read as a narrative chapter from a novel while creating an embellished piece of fiction set in post WWII America in a broken home.

United Nations
United Nations was started by Geoff Rickly, the vocalist/lyricist of the band Thursday. Other artists involved in the project possibly include Daryl Palumbo, vocalist of Glassjaw and Head Automatica, and Ben Koller, drummer for Converge. However, all members except for Rickly are under contracts with other record labels and are not legally permitted to work in projects released by another label, making it difficult for the official lineup to be well-known.
Press photos of the band released in 2008 depict four people wearing Ronald Reagan masks.

KEVIN DEVINE
Kevin Devine is a free spirit hard to come by these days. Formerly in the band Miracle of 86, Devine parted ways to embark on his solo career. With him and his acoustic guitar, he has become most known for alternately introspective and political lyrics and melody. His charming personality is what keeps him so genuine and surreal in this industry. Give him a try you wont be dissapointed.

Owen - At Home With
Owen is a solo project of Mike Kinsella from Chicago. Kinsella is one of the dominant figures in the Chicago indie scene, having also led the band American Fottball, and played in the band Cap'n Jazz, and Joan of Arc. Owen is known for its soft melodies, complex acoustics, combining lead acoustics with keyboard and other guitars, plaintive vocals and on occasions adding drums. Its a ver calm very tranquil experience.

The Rise Of Science
Its very hard to come across creative bands these days. Most bands are just mediocre attempts to be different and fail. In comes "The Rise Of Science" from Atlanta Georgia. This alternative progressive rock band packs a bunch. Their self-produced album Casey is one for the books. The 5 piece band self-funded, recorded and produced this album. The outcome...a amazing album. There sound is uncanny from their enlightening lyrics to there articulate musicianship. Bassist Zachary Boswell said to AP magazine "We write in-depth stories that span over characters' lives or moments, then we write a soundtrack to their situation." Keep you eyes open for this band.

Before They Were BIG
Before joining the screamo band Alexisonfire and started his solo career as City & Colour. Dallas Green was in a band called Helicon Blue. Producing several songs before breaking up. The three piece band also featured Chris Rankin on bass and vocal, and Nicholas Osczypko on drums. The band recorded a self-titled release.
Helicon Blue
Before Jonny Craig became the vocal threat he is today, becoming well known for many bands and projects (Dance Gavin Dance, Emarosa, Isles & Glaciers, and solo). He joined a pop-punk emo band in 2002 called "Ghost Runner On Third". While Craig was in the band they released a 6 song ep called "Speak Your Dreams". Due to a heavy drug abuse problem Craig had at the time he had to depart from the band. Which worked to his advantage, as he is now towering over the emo/screamo scene with his incredible voice.
Speak Your Dreams
Envy On The Coast - Low Country
Long Island based band Envy on the Coast has returned with their second full length album
"Lowcountry". Art work done by Justin Beck (Glassjaw). On 3.22.2010 the band released a full stream of the album on myspace. The band delivers again with metaphoric lyrics and intricate musicianship. Lead singer Ryan Hunter continues to push the boundaries by questioning the beliefs of others. A notable song "Made of stone" is a clear example of this. Overall the album stays on the same level as their previous work but continues to move foward. Lowcountry releases 3.30.10 go get it!
